Martin Margiela’s Spring–Summer 1996 collection is known for its playful use of trompe-l’œil, a technique that creates visual illusions. In this collection, he printed images of other garments onto lightweight dresses, making them look layered when they were actually a single piece.

The collection was innovative in two ways: it used only vintage clothing as the base, referencing the past, while also embracing new screen-printing technology to give these pieces a modern edge.

Look 52, featured here, was shown several times during the runway presentation. It was often styled with an additional trompe-l’œil silk jersey top or sweater, highlighting Margiela’s unique blend of illusion and design.

This piece reflects Margiela’s creative vision and his ability to blur the line between fashion and art.
